This collaboration arose out of a casual conversation between two artists at Newcastle Artspace.
These bespoke dishes featuring the Pirate Purl Yarns ship create a special place for pins, stitch markers and treasures. Ali creates each piece by hand. She rolls out the wet clay, stamps it, and forms the dish using a hand-made mould. Finally, she hand-paints each piece with ceramic glazes and returns it to the kiln for a final firing. These unique dishes are food-safe and may be enjoyed for both treats and treasures.
about the artist
Ali Sobel-Read is an American, now American-Australian, ceramic artist who moved to Newcastle more than 7 years ago with her family. She uses imagery and texture in her artwork to reflect on the many places she has called home. Her influences come from a range of locations – from New York City to Stockholm to just around the corner. Each piece tells a story.
